India Clue Challenge #1: This Port Handles More Cargo Than Any Other Major Port in India. Can You Name It?

India Clue Challenge Day #1: This Place Just Became India's Busiest Major Port. Can You Guess It?

Six clues. One answer. A record-breaking achievement. Can you guess the place?

India’s maritime sector has reached a new milestone.

In FY 2025–26, India’s major ports collectively handled 915.17 million tonnes of cargo, surpassing the annual target and registering over 7% growth. The achievement reflects stronger trade activity, improved logistics, and continued investment in port infrastructure.

Among all major ports, one emerged as the country’s top performer, handling more cargo than any other major port in India.

Can you identify it?

Clue #1

The location lies on the shores of a gulf known for having some of India’s highest tidal variations.

Clue #2

The surrounding region became globally known after one of the most devastating earthquakes in modern Indian history.

Clue #3

Its strategic position makes it an important maritime gateway connecting India with West Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Clue #4

The port was developed in the 1950s after Partition, when India needed a new major gateway on its western coast following the loss of Karachi Port.

Clue #5

It serves as a crucial trade hub for northern and western India, handling bulk cargo, crude oil, fertilizers, containers, and other essential commodities.

Clue #6

In FY 2025–26, it became India’s highest cargo-handling major port, crossing 160 million tonnes.

Why This Port Matters

Ports are the backbone of global trade. Nearly 95% of India’s trade by volume moves through maritime routes, making efficient ports critical for economic growth, energy security, and exports.

The mystery port is one of India’s most strategically important maritime assets. Although it is an artificial port, it has grown into one of the busiest cargo gateways in South Asia.

A major reason behind its success is geography. Located close to international shipping routes, it provides efficient access to industrial and consumption centers across northern and western India.

Another unique distinction is that the area became home to India’s first port-based Special Economic Zone (SEZ), helping attract industries and promote export-oriented manufacturing.

Recent Milestones

The port continues to set new benchmarks.

Recently, the port authority handled 40 ships in a single day, demonstrating growing operational efficiency and capacity.

The location has also become a symbol of India’s green maritime transition. Earlier this year, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the steel-cutting ceremony for India’s first all-electric green tug under the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). The vessel is being developed for this port authority and aims to reduce emissions from port operations.

These developments align with the government’s broader Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which seeks to transform India into a leading global maritime nation through modern infrastructure, sustainability, and logistics integration.
