Population Terminology

1. TFR – Total Fertility Rate

  • Average number of children a woman is expected to have during her lifetime.

2. RFR – Replacement Fertility Rate

  • Fertility level required to keep the population stable (β‰ˆ 2.1 children per woman).

3. CBR – Crude Birth Rate

  • Number of live births per 1,000 population per year.

4. CDR – Crude Death Rate

  • Number of deaths per 1,000 population per year.

5. IMR – Infant Mortality Rate

  • Number of deaths of infants (below 1 year) per 1,000 live births.

6. MMR – Maternal Mortality Ratio

  • Number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.

7. GRR – Gross Reproduction Rate

  • Average number of daughters a woman would give birth to during her lifetime (ignoring female mortality).

8. NRR – Net Reproduction Rate

  • Average number of daughters surviving to reproductive age born to a woman during her lifetime.

9. Sex Ratio

  • Number of females per 1,000 males.

10. Dependency Ratio

  • Ratio of the dependent population (children + elderly) to the working-age population.
