This week, record-low water levels stranded cargo ships, exposed decades-old shipwrecks, reduced hydropower generation, and disrupted trade across Europe. Stretching nearly 2,900 kilometres, this river has shaped empires, cultures and economies for over two millennia. Can you identify it before the final clue?

Clue #1 — This summer, it fell to one of its lowest levels in decades

Europe’s relentless heatwave and prolonged drought have pushed this great river to historic lows.

In Serbia and Croatia, hundreds of metres of riverbed have emerged. Boats sit stranded in marinas, sandbanks have appeared across navigation channels, and barges are carrying only a fraction of their normal cargo. In some places, shipwrecks hidden since World War II and even a cargo vessel that sank in 1937 have resurfaced. Experts warn the crisis is affecting transport, tourism, fisheries and wildlife across the basin. (Reuters)

Clue #2 — It begins in one mountain range and ends in an inland sea

This river rises in Germany’s Black Forest, where two smaller streams join to form one of Europe’s greatest waterways.

From there, it flows generally eastward across Central and Eastern Europe before emptying into the Black Sea through one of the world’s most biodiverse river deltas—a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Its delta supports hundreds of bird species, fish nurseries and Europe’s largest remaining wetlands.

Clue #4 — Some of Europe’s greatest engineering projects stand on it

This river powers massive hydroelectric projects and serves as one of Europe’s busiest commercial waterways.

Its most famous dam is a gigantic hydropower complex jointly operated by Serbia and Romania, producing electricity for millions while controlling navigation through the spectacular Iron Gates Gorge.

Among its major tributaries are the Sava, Tisza, Drava, Inn, Morava, Prut and Iskar, linking much of Central and Southeastern Europe into a single river system.

It is also connected to the Rhine through the Rhine–Main–[River name] Canal, allowing ships to travel from the North Sea to the Black Sea.

Clue #5 — Climate change is turning this river into a global warning

The current drought is more than a local problem.

Low water has reduced cargo transport, exposed vast sandbanks, disrupted grain exports, lowered hydropower generation, and even affected cooling water supplies for energy infrastructure in parts of Eastern Europe. Serbia’s largest hydropower station has seen output fall dramatically because of the reduced flow. (Reuters)

Scientists warn that hotter summers and more frequent droughts could make such disruptions increasingly common across Europe’s largest river systems.

Clue #6 — Its name has echoed through history for over 2,000 years

Ancient Romans used it as the northern frontier of their empire.

Today, it remains one of Europe’s busiest inland trade corridors.

It is the second-longest river in Europe, surpassed only by the Volga.
